Guggenheim Fellow

In July of 2003 I was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. In the words of the Guggenheim Foundation, “Fellows are appointed on the basis of unusually impressive achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishments.” The award places new fellows in the company of some the most acclaimed artists and scholars of their time.

Past Guggenheim fellows in photography include individuals such as, Robert Frank, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Gary Winogrand, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Sally Mann, and Nicholas Nixon just to name a few. The selection process draws upon recommendations from panels and juries involving hundreds of distinguished scholars, artists and scientists.

In 2003 the committee selected 184 fellows from 3,282 applicants. I was one of 7 photographers to receive this award.
