Visual Arts Department Chair

College of Arts & Media, University of Colorado Denver

August 2005-August 2009

As the Department Chair, I provided leadership focused on advancing the success of the department’s students, programs, faculty and staff, and served as a link between College administration and the department. In this role, I was responsible for guiding the development of program and learning outcomes and assessment processes, department’s budget, our partnership with the courtyard by Marriott with oversight of exhibitions in our Marriott gallery, BFA thesis exhibitions which took place in St. Cajetan’s and the Emmanuel Gallery, course schedule, recruiting, selecting, and evaluating faculty and staff, collaborating with faculty to ensure the success of programs, enacting policies and practices to guide our work, and supporting students as they progressed through our programs, capstone courses and experiences. Supervision included department faculty, the administrative assistant, the Gallery Director, the Visual Resources Center Director, and student employees. Activities also included space planning, securing equipment and planning for equipment needed, student advising, addressing conflicts between faculty or faculty and students, collaborating with the Art Department Chairs of our campus partners (Metro State University and the Community College of Denver) to manage and oversee shared facilities that included the Emmanuel Gallery, the Photography Lab, the Sculpture Studio, Painting Studios, and Art History Classrooms.

Visual Arts Department Chair

As Chair of the Visual Arts Department in the College of Arts & Media, I worked in collaboration with faculty to enhance teaching and learning, hire extraordinary tenure-track and part time faculty, support the research/creative work of our faculty and students, and raise the quality and visibility of our programs.

Beyond the development and creation of annual course schedules and teaching assignments, facilities management, and coordination of exhibitions, I developed and led a number of significant initiatives including a proposal to create a center for innovative visualization, transformation of classroom spaces into needed computer labs, establishment of a cohesive departmental vision across all program areas, and articulation of program and department outcomes while establishing foundation and capstone learning opportunities for students.

The Visual Arts Department offers a BA and BFA degree in areas of specialization that include; art history, photography, transmedia sculpture, painting and drawing, illustration, digital animation and digital design.
